Are you familiar with the weed in the picture? Perhaps at some point in your childhood, you also experienced picking the flowers of this weed and sometimes putting them in your ears to make earrings. Do you remember this grass? This and Heliotropium indicum, commonly known as Indian heliotrope, grow in waste areas and easily in soil. It is native to Asia. It is widely used in traditional medicine in Tamil Nadu, India. In the Philippines, this is called an elephant trumpet. An annual, erect, branched, hirsute plant, 15 to 50 centimetres tall. The leaves are opposite or alternate, somewhat hairy, and have small, clustered white flowers. The entire plant is used to treat diseases. The leaves are emollient and diuretic. It is also an insecticide for antidermatosis. In the Philippines, the decoction of dried roots used as an emmenagogue, meaning it was introduced to give the impression that the herbs increased menstruation. The extract obtained from plant leaves is used for wounds, skin ulcers, and boils. The juice is also used as an eye drop for conjunctivitis. The leaves are used as a poultice. Some seeds are chewed and eaten, said to be good for stomachaches. Medicine for hypertension, lack of energy, and sexual weakness. Crushed fresh leaves are used for skin diseases such as pruritus and scabies, and also have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antitussive, antioxidant, antipyretic, anti-diarrheal, anti-cancer, and antidiabetic properties. Fresh leaves and the placed leaves are used for the mentioned ailments.
